UNDERSTANDING LOAD STAGES IN NETWARE 5.x

NetWare 5 has several load stages--the various steps in the booting process of a NetWare server. Understanding the processes that occur during each stage can help narrow down a problem that occurs during the server boot, such as a server that always abends at boot.

Here are the six Kernel (boot) load stages.

STAGE K--Kernel Startup stage
STAGE 0--Pre STARTUP.NCF stage
STAGE 1--Post STARTUP.NCF and Pre SYS Volume Mount stage
STAGE 2--Pre AUTOEXEC.NCF execution and Post SYS Volume Mount stage
STAGE 3--Pre AUTOEXEC.NCF and Pre Name Service Loader stage
STAGE 4--Pre AUTOEXEC.NCF and Post Name Service Loader stage
STAGE 5--Post AUTOEXEC.NCF stage

Novell's TID 1001881 explains each stage in detail and provides a list of the modules loaded during each stage. After reviewing this document, you'll be able to better use the LOADSTAGE command at the server console in your troubleshooting process. It's a good document to keep handy for your troubleshooting toolbox.
